We’ve had a few people contact us about getting locals together on the issue of cars racing around the neighbourhood late at night etc. and what can be done about the problem.

So here is an open thread to let people discuss further.

What types of wildlife are in the Carindale area?

Someone has contacted us through the site with the following question:

i would like to know about the types of wildlife (plants and animals) found in the carindale area.
a list and a short description for each would be much appreciated. I am doing a report on wildlife in brisbane. Thankyou.

A kangaroo went past me when I was walking through the bushland near Scrub Road, I saw a bush turkey run across the road, and a dead snake just up the road … but aside from that I don’t think I can be a great deal of help!

What are the type of blocks used on Greendale Way?

I am a resident of the Carindale hills estate. I want to renovate my retaining wall and am having a problem identifying the type of blocks used on Greendale Way at the corner of Ridgeview St. Can you tell me the name of hte commercial retaining wall bricks used in htis spot?

Can anyone assist?

Man hit at Carindale service station now in coma

A man was approached by another man who punched him, at the service station at the corner of Creek Road and Winstanley Street, in Carindale, about 4.25pm on Sunday. He was put in an induced coma at the Princess Alexandria Hospital and was yesterday in a serious but stable condition.

Freecycle - community recycling online

I really love this concept.

Rather than throwing something away, dealing with eBay or a garage sale, why not just give it away? Give something to the community, reduce waste, and get rid of your junk. And if you’re after something - why not put the word out to your community first?

We’ve just signed up to the Freecycle Brisbane group. Here is a screen shot that gives you a bit of an idea of what you see inside (click on the image to enlarge it).

Some of the posts include:

“I have a very good quality bin approx 20L with lid that is about half full of cement powder … ”

“I have approx 11 tins of paint to give away… all good brands like Dulux and Wattle exterier paint, ceiling paint etc.

“Hi guys. Just wondering if any-one has a spare ADSL modem they are no- longer using.”

How great is that!?

As I write this the Brisbane group has 5329 active members. We really encourage all our Carindale Connect friends to sign up. And if you’re giving/receiving in your local area - it means that you don’t have to drive as far - so petrol and environmental savings too!

If you sign-up, or you’re already a member - we’d love to know what you think about Freecycle and what you’ve been giving/receiving.

I’ve been busy checking out lots of places I’ve lived, worked and visited around Australia with the arrival of Google Street View in Australia.

So let’s take a look at what’s just up the road…

Now this may be a bit of a sad reminder, (but we should not forget it or let what happened happen again!) … I’m talking about the beautiful Moreton Bay Fig Tree that was removed. When a Google auto mobile went along Scrub Road the fig tree was still there.

And a random spot on Old Cleveland Road, Carina, I’ve often thought (usually on the bus when I go past it) that I’d like to go into this store as it looks so interesting … but never have. “Swords armour knives and books” - doesn’t really scream out my name, but it’s a compelling sign!

Quest Newspapers’ new website

A blog for the local community

As you can see, Carindale Connect is now using a blog. We really should have done it from the start, as the site has become more than just a listing of events.

We moved some of our stories from the previous news section into the blog. The discussion from the Scrub Rd extension and the Fig tree removal are still on the non-blog section of the site. Future discussion of these issues will now take place on the blog, but they will be important to see in the context of the earlier discussion.

The way that the fig tree issue was debated and a strong fight put up to save the tree - but then removed in the early hours of the morning to the surprise of residents and the council it something that should not be forgotten (and it still gets me very angry!). I think it’s great that these discussions have been documented to some extent at least.

Using the blog for your commentary, will help us to make the community discussion even more efficient and easy. If there is something that you would like us to raise in the blog, rather than adding your comments to an existing post, email info@carindaleconnect.com.au

The blog should reflect the community - so discussions can be about big issues such as the environment, roads etc or just be about a great local restaurant you went to.

Also - be nice. You can be angry, opinionated, passionate … but … just be nice! Don’t get it? Here’s a bit more.

Robbery in Carindale tonight

Our neighbours in Naretha Street had some items, including their wallet, cards etc taken from their house while they were home. Their dog was even in the house.

So be extra cautious.

We’ve started a ‘neighbourhood watch’ category on this blog and welcome you to talk about your experiences with crime in the area or anything else related to that topic. You can either respond to this post or email us at info@carindaleconnect.com.au and we’ll post it to the blog. If you want it posted to the blog, please state that in your email and tell us if you want your name published with it or not.

Hopefully we can make a difference in keeping the area safe from creepy burglars and the like.

I’ve found, in comparison to every other place I’ve lived (and that’s quite a few suburbs in Brisbane and interstate), Carindale is the one I’ve felt most safe in.
