The Carindale Library held an afternoon tea today to celebrate its first birthday in its new premises.

Carindale Library Team Leader, Jennie Keppell welcomed the group and spoke about the birthday milestone and praised the library staff. She welcomed the government representatives in attendance – Cr Adrian Schrinner, Steve Minnikin MP and Ross Vasta MP.

Cr Schrinner read out some statistics for the Carindale Library. In the last 12 months there have been half a million through the doors and 550,000 loans.

“The number one thing that we get positive feedback about in our office across the road is the library and the staff in the library. That is something that we will never forget, we appreciate everything that you do in your team,” Cr Shrinner said.

“They work so hard, they love dealing with people, they love this library community. Not just the book component of it, but also the fact that this is about community and it’s about engaging with our local residents and making sure they have the services, the education and the facilities that are here.”

Sharan Harvey, Manager of Library Services told the audience that the way the community has embraced the library has made it successful. She said patrons, staff and Cr Shrinner have played a huge part in the success.

“In his role as deputy mayor, he is champion of a world class modern library service for the whole of Brisbane. We need champions like that. And this library has become a bit of a role model for other libraries, not just across Brisbane, but across other cities around Australia,” Ms Harvey said.

She said if there was one thing they would do differently, it would be to have built a large space to park all the prams.

Carindale local, Nell (pictured in the image slideshow below), came along and was described by one of the librarians as “one of the library’s best patrons” and by another librarian as “part of the furniture”. She said she loves reading the magazines and attending various events including art workshops and author talks. Nell, now a great-grandmother to a total of 19 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, says she discovered libraries when she was 10 years old and has been a regular ever since.

Cliff Wood (pictured in the image slideshow) was in attendance with his wife and friends. He is a visual artist based in Carindale who has had his artwork exhibited in the library.

Carindale Library is located downstairs at Westfield Carindale. Among the various upcoming events there, Masterchef winner Julie Goodwin is visiting the library on 30th April.

Neighbour Day

I was so happy with how our Neighbour Day event in Bridgnorth St Park, Carindale went. Thanks to everyone involved. A huge thanks to Carindale Rotary who provided a fantastic BBQ and billycarts!

We haven’t been aware of a Neighbour Day event in this area before and we’ve been wanting to run one for a while. The national day (on the last Sunday of March) has been running for 10 years now. Its origins are important.

One of the great things I noticed at this event was the interaction between people. Unlike a market, the stalls here had a focus on ‘activities’ not buying stuff. Not that markets or buying stuff is wrong, but we thought Neighbour Day needed to be more than that. And it was! Continue reading »

UPDATE: on the 14th March 2013 the Federal Member for Bonner Ross Vasta got an official Facebook page.

____________

What are your expectations of accessing your local members via Twitter and Facebook?

There is currently no official Facebook page or Twitter account for the Federal Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta. The Labor Candidate for Bonner, Laura Fraser Hardy has a Facebook page but is not yet on Twitter.

Will the 2013 Federal Election campaign be motivation enough for Mr Vasta’s social media debut? Will it be the prompt to get Ms Fraser Hardy tweeting? Continue reading »

Australia Post at Carindale is getting ready to move from its Westfield location after negotiations with Westfield to stay in the shopping centre failed.

Westfield Carindale has plans for more high-end retail in the space that the post office currently occupies.

Discussions took place regarding another spot within the centre. However, Australia Post found the alternative space offered to be unsuitable.

The Australia Post store, along with its many PO boxes, will now relocate to the Metropol shopping centre on Creek Road Mount Gravatt East in late April, an Australia Post spokesperson says.

Adrian Schrinner, Councillor for the Chandler Ward and Deputy Mayor, says he was very concerned to learn that the post office at Carindale may be relocating out of the shopping centre.

“The post office provides some important services for our local community, including the ability to pay bills in-person,” Cr Schrinner says. Continue reading »

Carindale Rotary are looking for helpers to join them for their Adopt A Road clean-up project along Creek Road on Sunday 20th January.

They are meeting at 7:30am at the Belmont Bowls Club. The clean-up is expected to take no more than 2 hours.

In 2011 the Rotary Club of Carindale ‘adopted’ the section of Creek Road running through Carina, Carina Heights and Carindale as part of the Adopt a Road program.

Councillor Adrian Schrinner said the Carindale Rotary Club has shown outstanding commitment to this program and with volunteer efforts have made a real difference to the cleanliness of our local roadway.

The following has been provided by Dean Bleasdale:

Adrian Schrinner, Steve Minnikin and Brisbane City Council:

I am absolutely disgusted in the obvious and blatant grab for revenue from BCC due to the city and state being economically ‘broke’. Not only is council fining people for the least infringements and many not even legal infringements, the obvious increase by the Qld Police Service’s constant presence now everywhere with speed cameras – without any speed, holiday or other offensives on – is nothing short of public harassment and revenue gathering for the state government.

4 weeks ago I received a $75 parking fine on my vehicle, OUTSIDE MY OWN HOUSE, on a wider than normal strip of grass. Continue reading »
