The following is a speech made in Federal Parliament by Ross Vasta the Member for Bonner on June 25th 2014. You can add your questions or comments at the end.

I would like to speak tonight about some major commitments the coalition government has made in this year’s budget for my electorate of Bonner. It pleases me to say we have managed to fulfil our election promises to the people of Bonner and delivered funding for a number of key projects in the area. Continue reading »

The following is a speech made by Steve Minnikin MP, State Member for Chatsworth in Queensland Parliament on 15 November 2012.

(2.57 pm): I rise today to share with the House the wonderful work of the Bulimba Creek Catchment Coordinating Committee, known affectionately in our Chatsworth community as B4C. Since launching in 1997, B4C has been hard at work in the south-east suburbs of Brisbane. From their sustainability centre located in the heart of the Chatsworth electorate, they have coordinated ongoing projects to protect the surrounding bushland reserves at Whites Hill, Belmont Hills, Minnippi and Mount Gravatt. They have also worked tirelessly to rehabilitate the fragile ecosystems at Bulimba Creek, Tingalpa Wetlands and Salvin Park amongst others. These efforts have been rewarded by a number of prestigious awards, including the National River Prize in 2005, two Landcare Queensland awards in 2001 and 2009, and four healthy waterways community group awards awarded between 2003 and 2011. Minnippi Parklands

Minnippi Parklands, Brisbane

Hey high school students, there’s plenty of great spots around Carindale, Carina, Mount Gravatt etc where you could get inspiration for this Brisbane photography challenge. But you’ll need to hurry as you have to submit the printed copy of your photo by June 3.

The Green Eyed View competition challenges high school students to capture a unique perspective of a natural wonder of Brisbane City. I double checked with them that the competition included the the Carindale region.  It can be a micro view, a macro view or from a perspective that the average natural areas photographer has not yet discovered. Finalists will be exhibited at the Bleeding Heart Gallery between June 22-27.

I reckon there’s some great nature photo opportunities to showcase sustainability and the beauty of Brisbane’s natural landscapes in areas such as Minnippi Parklands and Belmont Bushland Reserve. You could also get some inspiration via the Mount Gravatt Environment Group and the Bulimba Creek Catchment Coordinating Committee (B4C).

If you feel like setting yourself, your friends and family a healthy challenge – say a 3km, 5km or 10km challenge – why not get involved in this upcoming fun run/walk taking place on Sunday 19th June?

The Fit Kids Community Fun Run Walk, now in its second year, is a fundraising event run by the Camp Hill State Infants and Primary School Parents & Citizens Association. The course is along the Bulimba Creek Bikeway, starting at the Carindale Recreation Reserve and then heading towards Minnippi Parklands – a fairly flat route with some gentle inclines.

I spoke to the school’s P & C Association President Alison Blacker about the event.

MinnippiI took some photos during a recent walk through Minnippi parkland. It was extremely wet and we gave up trying to avoid walking in deep puddles. It’s incredible that this is so close to suburbia. It is beautiful and peaceful escape.

This area got a lot of media attention a few years ago in relation to controversial developments and the wildlife here. Continue reading »
