Senator Jan McLucas

Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Carers Senator Jan McLucas has been running several National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) forums around Australia. Senator McLucas is now coming to Brisbane to run the forum with Labor Senator for Queensland Claire Moore at Mount Gravatt Bowls Club.

Senator Moore, on her Facebook page, said: “These forums will be a great opportunity to hear the results of the senate committee inquiry (which I had the honour of chairing) and Jan’s insights into the process of bringing an NDIS to all Australians.”

The legislation to set up the NDIS was passed today by the House of Representatives.

The following is the transcript of a speech made in Queensland Parliament today by Steve Minnikin MP, State Member for Chatsworth.

Many years ago I watched an episode of Four Corners that, to the best of my memory, was titled the National Jigsaw Puzzle, which dealt with duplication in the service delivery of the federal and state governments. I was taken aback by the absolute waste of taxpayers’ dollars being spent on service delivery that was being covered by multiple tiers of government. At one stage of my career I was the executive officer of Redland shire council, as it was then known, and at that time it continued to amaze me that areas such as health and child care had all three levels of government with their finger in the pie. The following is a speech by Steve Minnikin MP, State Member for Chatsworth made in Queensland Parliament on 14th November 2012.

(8.08 pm): I rise with pride in this chamber to support the Disability Services (Your Life Your Choice) Amendment Bill 2012 and from the outset congratulate the minister and the committee involved. This amendment bill is a clear demonstration of the Newman government’s commitment to improving Queensland’s front-line disability services.

This amendment bill focuses on streamlining and improving disability services to ensure that disabled Queenslanders and their families have more decision-making power and options. What does that mean? It means that, yet again, red tape will be reduced for service providers and individuals will get better value for money. Continue reading »

Fiona Anderson, the Queensland Coordinator of the Every Australian Counts campaign, spoke at the 4th ‘Disability Awareness and Opportunity Expo’ at Mount Gravatt Showgrounds on Wednesday.

Ms Anderson described how the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is expected to work and how it compares to the current situation. A large portion of her speech transcript follows.
