What a great Saturday morning. I went along to the Southside Sustainabilty Centre’s open day that B4C run once a month.

It all started with a spot of Tai Chi and we were joined by the lovely Di Farmer for that. We were guided by Tai Chi teacher Green Dean through some basic beginner steps. We were concentrating on breathing, basic beginner moves and we ended imagining we were stroking the tail feathers of a beautiful bird and then releasing it to the sky.  Just loved it, and we all agreed it was a great way to kick start the day.

B4C (Bulimba Creek Catchment Coordinating Committee) has taken out the Healthy Waterways Community Group 2011 Award.

Sensory garden being worked onWe went to the Southside Sustainability Centre open day yesterday and had a look at the great set-up they have there.  We did a small amount of weeding, planting and watering while we were there too. Next time I’ll know to wear more appropriate shoes (i.e. not really good sneakers!) and bring a wide brimmed hat.

I had a chat with the centre’s Hannah Elvery and Heather Barns who were showing the visitors around, helping people to try out various tasks and answering questions about the various plants etc.  Read the rest of this entry »

Our region has some beautiful green areas, but how much time do we spend in them and how much do we understand about them? There’s a great opportunity for us to learn about and participate in our local natural environment through the Southside Sustainability Centre.

The Sustainability Centre is a project of the not-for-profit Bulimba Creek Catchment Coordinating Committee (B4C). There’s a nursery, community gardens, native revegetation areas and plenty more.  And this weekend they are inviting you to their first open-day of 2011.

When: Feb 5, 2011 9:00am – midday.
Where: Southside Sustainability Centre, Cnr Old Cleveland Rd & Wright St, Carindale
Contact: Ph 3420 4800 / email b4c@bulimbacreek.org.au.

People of all ages and experience levels are welcome to come and see how the centre has survived the summer and recent conditions. You can also purchase seedlings and join in the volunteering activities.

I caught up with the Secretary of the Bulimba Creek Catchment Committee, Heather Barns.  Read the rest of this entry »
