The following is a speech made by Steve Minnikin MP, State Member for Chatsworth in Queensland Parliament on 15 November 2012.

(2.57 pm): I rise today to share with the House the wonderful work of the Bulimba Creek Catchment Coordinating Committee, known affectionately in our Chatsworth community as B4C. Since launching in 1997, B4C has been hard at work in the south-east suburbs of Brisbane. From their sustainability centre located in the heart of the Chatsworth electorate, they have coordinated ongoing projects to protect the surrounding bushland reserves at Whites Hill, Belmont Hills, Minnippi and Mount Gravatt. They have also worked tirelessly to rehabilitate the fragile ecosystems at Bulimba Creek, Tingalpa Wetlands and Salvin Park amongst others. These efforts have been rewarded by a number of prestigious awards, including the National River Prize in 2005, two Landcare Queensland awards in 2001 and 2009, and four healthy waterways community group awards awarded between 2003 and 2011. Note from the editor: The YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament is a Queensland Studies Authority accredited education program for young Queenslanders. The members of the 2011 YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament will officially be sworn in on Saturday 16th April during the weekend-long Forum in Brisbane.  We’ve been asking the local representatives to tell you a bit about themselves via a guest post here.

Guest Post by Alison Dower

Who am I?

My name is Alison Dower, I am 23 years old and I live in the Greenslopes Electorate in the awesome suburb of Coorparoo. I have been selected as the Youth Member for Greenslopes for the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament this year. In my role I hope to take the issues that affect young people and the community to the Youth Parliament and spend time discussing all the opportunities that we can think of to improve upon everyones experience of life in our community. The opportunity that I have been given in attending Queensland Youth Parliament is one that I am incredibly grateful for and will be utilising to its fullest capacity.

What do I do for fun?

I like being busy and packing as much into my week as I possibly can, presently I work full time as a Program Officer with Lifestream Foundation in East Brisbane supporting adults with intellectual disabilities. I am also learning AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language) at TAFE and completing my Bachelor of Social Work at QUT. I am also currently volunteering with YANQ (Youth Affair Network of Queensland). In my spare time I do rockclimbing, boxing and fitness and I practice my fire twirling skills. Studying, reading and sleeping do fit in there somewhere too. Over the years I have volunteered with the State Emergency Service and Lifestream Foundation and participated in tennis, touch footy, swimming and indoor and outdoor rockclimbing and hiking. Bulimba Creek

Our region has some beautiful green areas, but how much time do we spend in them and how much do we understand about them? There’s a great opportunity for us to learn about and participate in our local natural environment through the Southside Sustainability Centre.

The Sustainability Centre is a project of the not-for-profit Bulimba Creek Catchment Coordinating Committee (B4C). There’s a nursery, community gardens, native revegetation areas and plenty more.  And this weekend they are inviting you to their first open-day of 2011.

When: Feb 5, 2011 9:00am – midday.
Where: Southside Sustainability Centre, Cnr Old Cleveland Rd & Wright St, Carindale
Contact: Ph 3420 4800 / email b4c@bulimbacreek.org.au.

People of all ages and experience levels are welcome to come and see how the centre has survived the summer and recent conditions. You can also purchase seedlings and join in the volunteering activities.

I caught up with the Secretary of the Bulimba Creek Catchment Committee, Heather Barns.  Continue reading »
