Whites Hill State School Fields

After receiving a response to my letter to Ian Kaye, member for Greenslopes, and attending the Whites Hill State College P&C meeting to listen to Steve Minnikin, Member for Chatsworth (my electorate), talk about the sale of our much loved and used school oval, I feel that we are just going to keep hearing the same thing until sitting members feel the heat of the locals’ unrest!

There are many reasons why we as a community want to keep our school oval:

  • it is used weekly by the Gateway District High Schools and the Lytton District Primary schools for inter-school sport;
  • it allows for growth into the future and ensures plenty of room for sports and all children to be able to participate at the same time, unlike at some other local overcapacity schools;
  • it is part of a precious Sugar Glider Corridor and regularly has koalas and other native wildlife in the well-established trees that form the surrounds of the playing fields;
  • Brisbane is already well behind both Sydney and Melbourne cities with the amount of green space in the inner city areas and the sale of this green space is in contradiction of the Brisbane City Council plan. Continue reading »

naplan preparationIf you have children in years 3, 5, 7 or 9 they will be doing NAPLAN testing this week. These students will be tested in the areas of Reading, Writing/Language Conventions and Numeracy.
NAPLAN is the National Assessment Program that assesses Australian school students in Literacy and Numeracy.

Reading: A selection of various reading comprehension tests. (Including stories, poems, factual and instructional texts)
Writing: Students will write a persuasive text.
Language Conventions: Spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Numeracy: A wide range of mathematical concepts are tested. (Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability)

Love it or hate it, NAPLAN is happening in every school, in every state at the same time around the nation. While some Secondary schools place high importance on NAPLAN results as part of their application requirements, most schools see it for what it really is: a “moment in time” test. Students who participate receive individual reports on their results as well as information about how well they performed compared to other students in their year group. Continue reading »

The Carindale Library held an afternoon tea today to celebrate its first birthday in its new premises.

Carindale Library Team Leader, Jennie Keppell welcomed the group and spoke about the birthday milestone and praised the library staff. She welcomed the government representatives in attendance – Cr Adrian Schrinner, Steve Minnikin MP and Ross Vasta MP.

Cr Schrinner read out some statistics for the Carindale Library. In the last 12 months there have been half a million through the doors and 550,000 loans.

“The number one thing that we get positive feedback about in our office across the road is the library and the staff in the library. That is something that we will never forget, we appreciate everything that you do in your team,” Cr Shrinner said.

“They work so hard, they love dealing with people, they love this library community. Not just the book component of it, but also the fact that this is about community and it’s about engaging with our local residents and making sure they have the services, the education and the facilities that are here.”

Sharan Harvey, Manager of Library Services told the audience that the way the community has embraced the library has made it successful. She said patrons, staff and Cr Shrinner have played a huge part in the success.

“In his role as deputy mayor, he is champion of a world class modern library service for the whole of Brisbane. We need champions like that. And this library has become a bit of a role model for other libraries, not just across Brisbane, but across other cities around Australia,” Ms Harvey said.

She said if there was one thing they would do differently, it would be to have built a large space to park all the prams.

Carindale local, Nell (pictured in the image slideshow below), came along and was described by one of the librarians as “one of the library’s best patrons” and by another librarian as “part of the furniture”. She said she loves reading the magazines and attending various events including art workshops and author talks. Nell, now a great-grandmother to a total of 19 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, says she discovered libraries when she was 10 years old and has been a regular ever since.

Cliff Wood (pictured in the image slideshow) was in attendance with his wife and friends. He is a visual artist based in Carindale who has had his artwork exhibited in the library.

Carindale Library is located downstairs at Westfield Carindale. Among the various upcoming events there, Masterchef winner Julie Goodwin is visiting the library on 30th April.

The Lord Mayor’s Writers in Residence series is bringing Julie to Brisbane, to speak about the release of her latest recipe book, Gather.

Books will be available for purchase on the evening from Dymocks Carindale.

People attending the talk are encouraged to bring a copy of a favourite family recipe to swap with others during the event.

Julie Goodwin shared a message for Neighbour Day recently:

We Aussies love our food, and in my view there is no better way to bring people together than over a good meal. Food is at the heart of all our celebrations. It connects us, it nourishes us, and the sharing of it creates wonderful memories and strong communities. Full Neighbour Day message from Julie.

Editor’s note: We’ve heard lots of great things about community activities at Seven Hills State School. So after having a chat to Catherine Raff about some of the school’s aims and projects, I asked her if she’d like to provide a guest post for Carindale Connect to share what is unique about the school and how they hope to further reach out to the local community.

The helpers at Grandparent's Day

Helpers at Seven Hills State School’s Grandparent’s Day

My son started Year 1 at Seven Hills State School in 2005 when there were 130 something kids at the school. Everyone knew everyone. The grade 7s knew the preppies by name and most parents knew each other enough to at least say hi at the school gate. It had a nice community feel about it and we felt privileged to be a part of such a great little school. Other people wanted that warm fuzzy feeling for their families too which saw the school grow and it now numbers a proud 408 students. Continue reading »
