At the September Business at Sunrise we held our second Toolbox for the year. At our Toolbox sessions we ask speakers to talk from different aspects on a given topic. This time we looked at the SEBCC initiative linking the Chamber with our member High Schools, with the topic ‘The benefits of a good relationship between schools and business’. Our speakers, Edwin Crisp, Terry O’Hanlon-Rose, Michael Piper and Gerowyn Lacaze spoke of the benefits to both business and students of school based traineeships and work experience from the view of the trainer, the placement, the employer and the school. A number of business people in attendance showed interest in participating with the SEBCC and Partnership Brokers in our initiative to place students in work experience with member businesses. I would like to thank Craig Fossey, our school liaison and Jasmine Wright of Partnership Brokers for their work in making the morning a great success. If you were unable to attend and would like information on this initiative please contact either Craig – 3847 7017 or Jasmine – 3267 2231.

This month’s Table Agenda was sponsored by Balmoral State High, CHAC, Coorparoo Secondary College, Loreto College, White’s Hill State College and Holland Park State High.

Are you aware that the Brisbane City Council now has a hotline to call specifically for Businesses? The Business Hotline was launched by the Lord Mayor in July and provides businesses with 24/7 access to the Council’s call centre to obtain advice on all business related matters. If you have a business-related enquiry with Council call 133 BNE (263).

You will have received an email to launch our joint membership with CCIQ, Queensland’s peak industry body, giving you both benefits of belonging to the SEBCC, your local chamber and the added benefits offered by CCIQ. Several members have already taken up this offer, if you would like to further discuss the benefits available to your business call Colin Fruk, CCIQ, Regional Manager Brisbane on 07 3353 7703.

As a corporate member of the SEBCC you have the opportunity to be highlighted as one of our Businesses of the Month, you are also eligible to become a Sponsor of the Business at Sunrise Table Agenda. If you are interested in one of these opportunities to highlight your business please contact me, we are now filling spots for 2013.

The invitation has been sent for our Annual Evening at Parliament House to be held on Wednesday October 10th. Once again it will be open to family members over the age of 5, for a BBQ overlooking the Brisbane River and a tour of the House in Session. This year it is made possible by our four members of State Parliament. Steve Minnikin, Member for Chatsworth, Ian Kay, Member for Greenslopes, Jackie Trad, Member for South Brisbane and Aaron Dilloway Member for Bulimba. Numbers are limited so book early.

I look forward to seeing you at the October Business at Sunrise to hear an inspirational business woman, Lyndall De Marco, and to attend the SEBCC AGM.
