The “Bellas” is a group of women who play social soccer in Carina on Tuesday nights. Some have played before and some are brand new to the sport. The emphasis is on keeping fit and having fun. I’m lucky enough to play with them too, while having pretty much no sporting background. I will be featuring a Bella here about once a week. Meet Sharon, an impressive striker who encourages women of all ages and fitness levels to try this great sport!

Tell us about any soccer background you have
I have always loved playing football, being the biggest tomboy this started at a very young age playing at every opportunity in the street with my brother and our neighbours. Living in West London, we could hear the roar of the crowd from Wembley on cup days; it was always my dream to be the first female to score a goal at the FA Cup!

Tell us about any other (non-soccer) sport background you have
Years of cross country, athletics and hockey. Thanks to one particular nasty hockey injury I am now wearing braces to straighten my teeth back up!

What do you like about Bellas soccer?
It is great way to keep fit and anybody of any level can come along and play, it is good fun, nobody is afraid to have a laugh at themselves if they stuff up.

Do you have any favourite sports teams / sports stars?
Chelsea and England FC a childhood sports star favourite would have to be Marco Van Basten (we all dreamt of being chosen to play for Ajax as kids!)

Do you have any favourite local restaurants/cafes?
Any restaurant along Bennetts Road, especially Thai Mali and Villa Maria.

What are your other interests / things you spend time on outside of Bellas and work?
Spending time with my two kids even if it is mainly as their taxi driver! I volunteer at AC Carina FC and am coaching junior football which is great way to pass on my passion for football to the next generation
