bootsThe “Bellas” is a group of women who play social soccer in Carina on Tuesday nights. Some have played before and some are brand new to the sport. The emphasis is on keeping fit and having fun. I’m lucky enough to play with them too (while having very little sporting experience!). I’m featuring a Bella here about once a week. Meet Susie (nicknamed “Naughty” by some of her mates). She’s assisted with the Homeless Soccer World Cup among many other great things. She’s always encouraging and helping the other Bellas and has possibly the biggest kick in the group!

Susie Ed
Age:47. Born: Australia.
Lives: Mansfield, Brisbane.
Occupation: Social Worker

Tell us about any soccer background you have
LOVED HOCKEY! And played for Mackay, but because soccer was cheaper and the boys were fitter, took up chasing bigger balls … no pun intended….

Tell us about any other (non-soccer) sport background you have
Grew up playing hockey, sailing, cross country running and generally would give anything a go. Think I was a dog in a previous life .. i.e. running is not purposeful unless you are chasing a stick or ball?

What do you like about Bellas soccer?
It is my Zen part of the week. For one hour I get lost in the moment totally. I am trying to practice living in the moment and the only time I can master this practice is when I am playing with the Bella’s. I totally focus on my breath … because I often find breathing hard after a good run … and find myself totally in the moment .. Yes Stacey, your passion about giving up smoking is having an impact! The other players are brilliant, inspirational, smart and from such diverse backgrounds and they change every week .. no ho hum at Bella’s!

Do you have any favourite sports teams / sports stars?
Chelsea FC …. and Crystal Palace sucks (just for you Phil!). Not really a sports fan (true confessions). Just watched 10 questions for the Dalai Lama and loved his responses … I have a thing for always cheering the under-dog, which is why I love the Bella’s. Each week, we turn up, put on a different jersey, last weeks’ team mate is now foe and we get to play a game of soccer which is balanced between skill and numbers. So I guess I really like that there are no allegiances and we get to get to know everyone. The best part is the laughter!

Do you have any favourite local restaurants/cafes?
Sings Kitchen at Coorparoo … where all good teams meet and eat. Time for another get together ladies!

What are your other interests / things you spend time on (outside of Bellas and work)
Work, and raising a pre-teen boy. Ohhh .. my other interests … sculpting, hanging out with good friends, writing, house interior/exterior design, reading … (all things I promise myself I am going to pursue a lot more, once I have raised a well-balanced and insightful young man).

  1. I would love to join up. Is it too late in the season? Kristie

  2. I applaud this group from afar and can guarantee that anyone joining them will increase their aerobic lung capacity merely by the amount of laughing they will do……
